As you are all most likely aware the last few months have seen an alarming toll of motorcycle related accidents some fatal. More than ever it is essential that you watch out on our roads. While many of these accidents have been attributable to rider error there is still the ever increasing threat of distracted drivers due in no small part to their preoccupation with mobile devices. While making yourself more visible is a good thing you cannot rely on this alone to prevent a distracted or intoxicated driver causing you harm. Take care to manage your riding space and separate your self from those who exhibit the tell tale signs of haste and distraction.

On a related subject Dave Wright has sent us the February Road Safety Report which contains some informative information on the legality or illegality of lane splitting in WA

You can read the full article in the Newsletters section, here is an extract:

"I have covered this issue before but I am still asked if lane splitting and filtering is permitted in WA. One of the issues raised during discussions with the Minister for Transport was allowing motorcycle lane filtering. This has been taken off the list because lane filtering is allowed in Western Australia within certain limitations (surrounding traffic must be stationary, signalling is still required and must be done safely).

Here is the related regulation for overtaking. You will note that reg 122(1) stipulates a moving vehicle so when the vehicles are stationary that reg doesn’t apply.

    122.        Overtaking

          (1)     When overtaking a moving vehicle, a driver of a vehicle (other than a bicycle) shall, except as provided in sub-regulations (2) and (3), pass to the right of that vehicle, at a safe distance.

Points: 2 Modified penalties: 2 PU

          (2)     Where a carriageway is a one‑way carriageway, or has 2 or more marked lanes for vehicles traveling in the same direction, a driver may overtake and pass in another marked lane to the left of a vehicle, if conditions permit him or her to do so with safety.

Lane splitting - traveling between two lanes of moving traffic is illegal in WA

This petition could make a big difference to the safety standards, range and price of motorbike helmets in Australia.

The current laws and regulations conflict to the point that a rider can ride into another State and their helmet will be illegal. In some States it is impossible to buy a legal helmet as the required "stickers" are no longer produced.

This petition will urge the relevant Government departments to allow a consistent standard to apply at a national level. This would remove barriers to imported helmets and result in lower prices, a wider range of helmets and improved standards. It will also pave the way to accepting helmets meeting rigorous international standards.

Click here to read more, sign the petition if you agree, and pass on to other riders you know.

Subject: International Club Film Project - Content wanted!

    Dear Delegates,

As announced at the last Council Meeting in Bled we want to produce a film about the International BMW Club Community both cars and motorcycle.

Our idea is not to film the content ourselves, but ask you to send us content. We then would do the editing. The overall length of the whole film after editing should not exceed five minutes.  The film could then be used on Facebook, Youtube or on Club Webpages….

The goal is to show how strong and international the BMW Car and Motorcycle Clubs are. This will helps us to improve the awareness for the Clubs (also within BMW).

    Please send us:

    • ·         Full HD Video Data (if ever possible no compressed format like quicktime or mp4)
    • ·         Not longer than 10 minutes per umbrella organization (screening the material is not only time consuming but also expensive)
    • ·         Raw data – uncut film (we will do the cutting)
    • ·         Free of rights (!)

    How to transfer the files:

Please send Data CD/DVD or USB drives to your club president who will forward onto Clubs Australia to send to BMW Group Classic

    Deadline

Please send in your content before 14th March 2014.

    Best regards

Just got back in from the Mt Augustus to Paraburdoo stage of the Desert Raid 2013. Had to return home as when the rear suspension bottomed out along the Pigandy Road, the tool box smashed a section of the rear brake caliper off. The brake pipe fitting has taken a big hit too. The tool box has a large dent in the bottom. A whole bunch of us did a group purchase of these things. Obviously not many of us are using our GS's to the full :)
This tool box was supposed to be designed for the GSA by an adventure rider. Not what you would call 'fit-for-purpose'. I now seem to recall Digger mentioning that his tool box broke off the rear brake bleeder.
Again obviously, this could lead to brake failure, not what is desired in remote Western Australia. I will post pictures on my ride report.
